How to say your age in French: j'ai 30 ans, not je suis

French does not say how old you are. It says how many years you have. One verb, avoir, fixes the most common beginner mistake, and opens the door to a dozen everyday expressions.

By Stan Lee MBINI and Darcya Hamilton BOULINGUI BOULINGUI

J'ai trente ans.

I have thirty years. (I'm thirty.)

Quick test. How do you say I'm thirty in French? If your first idea was je suis trente ans, you are in very good company: it is the mistake we hear most often in a first week of French, from teenagers and engineers alike. The good news is that it disappears the day you understand why French says it differently.

In French, you have your age

English uses to be for age: I am thirty. French uses avoir, to have, followed by the number and the word ans, years. Literally, you say that you have thirty years.

J'ai trente ans.

I'm thirty. (word for word: I have thirty years)

Avoir in the present tense

Before anything else, avoir has to be automatic. It is irregular, and you will use it hundreds of times a day, so learn the six forms by heart and say them out loud.

FrenchEnglish
1st singularj'aiI have
2nd singulartu asyou have (friendly)
3rd singularil / elle / on ahe / she / we have
1st pluralnous avonswe have
2nd pluralvous avezyou have (polite or plural)
3rd pluralils / elles ontthey have

Tu as vingt ans.

You're twenty.

Il a huit ans.

He's eight.

Ma grand-mère a quatre-vingt-dix ans.

My grandmother is ninety.

Nous avons le même âge.

We are the same age.

Asking someone's age

The question uses the same verb. There are three ways to ask, from relaxed to formal, and the one you choose tells the other person how close you feel to them.

Tu as quel âge ?

How old are you? (friendly, spoken)

Quel âge as-tu ?

How old are you? (friendly, more careful)

Quel âge avez-vous ?

How old are you? (polite: an adult you don't know)

The same logic, everywhere

Once you know that French has its age, a whole family of expressions makes sense. Where English says I am for a feeling or a physical state, French very often says I have. These are among the most useful sentences you will learn this year, and they all follow the pattern of j'ai trente ans.

FrenchEnglishWord for word
j'ai faimI'm hungryI have hunger
j'ai soifI'm thirstyI have thirst
j'ai froid / j'ai chaudI'm cold / I'm hotI have cold / heat
j'ai peurI'm afraidI have fear
j'ai sommeilI'm sleepyI have sleep
j'ai raison / j'ai tortI'm right / I'm wrongI have reason / wrong
j'ai besoin de…I need…I have need of
j'ai envie de…I feel like…I have desire of
j'ai mal à la têteI have a headacheI have pain at the head

Where English says I am, French often says I have. Learn the pattern once, and ten sentences come with it.

Say it out loud

Grammar becomes French only when you say it. Read each sentence below out loud, three times, then cover the French and say it from the English. This is exactly how the speaking guides work: five sentences a day, out loud, until they come without thinking.

J'ai trente-deux ans et j'ai faim.

I'm thirty-two and I'm hungry.

Tu as raison, il a tort.

You're right, he's wrong.

Vous avez besoin d'aide ?

Do you need help?

On a froid, on rentre ?

We're cold, shall we go home?
